PermaLinkA hat-trick weekend!01:29:37 PM
Written By : Scott Good

I spent the past weekend at Mid-Ohio, racing with NASA. Other than a downpour for 45 minutes between sessions on Saturday, the weather could not have been nicer.

Friday afternoon was a 90-minute Enduro race which included a mandatory pit stop to load 5 gallons of gas. Running in E1, the next-to-slowest class of cars in the group, 90 minutes of qualifying-level laps along with some excellent pit work by my friends Jim Child and Scott Berkowitz ultimately resulted in a classic turtle-and-hare finish with me winning overall and just one car remaining on the lead lap.

Special thanks to John Zemon from A Part Above for his amazingly quick delivery of the fuel filler neck that made my fast fueling possible.

The video above is from the first 15 minutes of the Enduro and gives you an idea of the back-and-forth racing going on.

Saturday and Sunday, though, were the really good parts of the weekend.

Coming into this weekend, I have managed to set new track records each weekend I've raced this year. Jim Child and his black Porsche 968 held the GTS2 record for Mid-Ohio's Pro Course with a lap of 1:39.040. On Saturday I beat it, lowering the record to 1:38.411 (if memory serves), then lowered it again by another tenth on Sunday.

But that's not the good part.

Back in April when we were last at Mid-Ohio (but running the longer Club Course), I blogged about my new wing and the changes it had made in my lap times. At the time I said I thought a 1:37 lap was do-able and a 1:36 maybe possible. Well, I'm halfway there.

In Sunday's qualifying, in what I have to say were almost perfect conditions, I ran a first lap (before the tires were completely up to temperature) in the mid-1:39s, then a smoking 1:37.5 and then was on an even faster lap until I over-cooked the next to last turn, slid around a bit, and had to settle for a 1:37.8. I really think that lap had the possibility of getting close to a 1:36 but, well, I guess I'll just have to go back and try again in August.

Qualifying laps don't count toward lap records with NASA so, other than getting me a great starting position, these numbers aren't good for anything other than bragging rights but I'm OK with that...but dreaming of a 1:36....

Anyway, a great weekend all around. Three races, three wins. That makes me 6 wins (and one 2nd) for 7 starts this year. Not too shabby. If you can make it to Mid-Ohio the weekend of August 14-16, be sure to look me up.

What I do for a living

I am the President of Teamwork Solutions a long-time Lotus, now IBM, Premier Partner.

With offices in Columbus and Cincinnati, Ohio, we specialize in custom application development for IBM Lotus Notes, Domino, and related technologies. Our software product, ProcessIt! (see below), is quite possibly the world's best, most powerful and easiest-to-use workflow tool for Notes and the web.

Our clients are some of the world's largest corporations along with others that aren't so big.

We do excellent work, quickly, and often on a fixed-fee basis. We'd love to talk to you about your next project.

I am a Contributing Author to Lotus Advisor Magazine, with more than 40 articles under my belt.

I've written how-to series (serieses?) on LotusScript, JavaScript, Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), and now, AJAX (Asynchronous JavaScript and XML), as well as a bit on miscellaneous web development topics.

TheView.jpg

I also write for The View as of the July/August issue where I showed how to take an ugly Notes applications and make it beautiful with just a few minutes' (careful) work.

I am the chief architect and one of two primary developers for what many consider the best all-around workflow tool for Notes/Domino, anywhere, regardless of price.

It's called ProcessIt!, and you can read all about it at www.notesworkflow.com but the bottom line is this: ProcessIt! is fast and easy to learn, extremely powerful, and can be used by mortals. Even--dare I say it?--common users.

You can spend a lot more on a workflow tool but you won't be able to do a lot more for all the extra money.

Don't believe me? Download and try it for free for 60 days.

Copyright Porsche and NASA...not me!

I race a Porsche 944 S2 in National Auto Sport Assocation events and am the 2008 National Champion in NASA's GTS2 class.

Blame this event, a few years ago, for starting that particular money drain all over again.

In support of my habit, I am the NASA Great Lakes Region's GTS (German Touring Series) Director.

I'm also a Nationally-Certified Instructor for the Porsche Club of America and am in charge of classroom sessions for the Mid-Ohio region when we are doing high performance driving events.

In a prior racing life, I was the Midwestern Regional Formula Atlantic Champion and, in 1991, the Ohio Vally Region of SCCA's Regional Driver of the Year (but that, alas, went away when my credit cards let go of the rope!).

I'm writing a book...or at least trying to.

It's murder mystery in which, not too surprisingly, the main character runs a small software company and races cars for fun. Oh yeah, and lives near where I do.

Just where do they come up with these crazy ideas?
